Catholic Care, Newcastle
Catholic Care has some information for former residents of Monte Pio. Unfortunately at times this information is limited but it is something. If you wish to access old information, albeit scant, you can contact Catholic Care on 4979 1172.
Catholic Care has access to an electronic database, set up by the Sisters of St Joseph, which lists the children who were residents at both the Murray Dwyer and the Monte Pio Orphanages. This database, in the case of the Monte Pio Orphanage, goes right back to 1901, prior to the orphanage itself having been established and when girls were actually residents at the Convent at Singleton. During that period, the only records kept were sparse and related mainly to admission and discharge dates. Thereafter, records gradually improved over a long time, but would still probably be disappointing to most enquirers. Nevertheless, past residents and family researchers are welcome to request copies of original documentation once they have verified their identity such as Driver’s Licence, obviously for privacy reasons.
